From The Weekly Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Thursday, May 2, 1912.
"P. S. McCualsky, a cabinet maker in Jones street, living in the Belle Vista addition, reported that his house had been entered during the night and his trouser, containing $10 in money, stolen. The burglar entered the place by forcing a window on the ground floor. Mrs. McCualsky was awakened during the night by hearing some one crawling along the floor. She sat up in bed and told the intruder that he was discovered and that 'he'd better get out'. At the same time she called to her husband. The burglar jumped to his feet, grabbed Mr. McCualsky's trousers and dashed from the door, which he had unlocked to provide an exit to be used in case he left hurriedly.
The trousers and the money in the pockets were the only things stolen and though a careful search of the vicinity of the burglary was made, the garments could not be found."

Mary Cool Oliver
Mary Cool Oliver (1849-1922)

Mary Cool Oliver was born April 17, 1849 at Pittsburgh PA (most likely in the Mt. Washington area), a daughter of Frederick and Eliza Owens Cool. She married David Oliver in 1866 at Pittsburgh and then moved to Belpre OH shortly afterward and remained there the rest of her life. She died there on June 24, 1922 and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery (now Parkersburg Memorial Gardens) in Parkersburg WV.
Her obituary: (The Parkersburg Sentinel, Parkersburg WV, June 24, 1922, p 5)
"Friends in Belpre and also in Parkersburg will be deeply grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary Oliver, wife of David Oliver, which occurred this morning at 10:00 at the family residence on Florence St., after an illness of about five weeks, caused by complications affecting the heart.
The deceased who was 74 years old had resided in Belpre for 56 years coming to that village shortly after her marriage to Mr. Oliver, who survives her, her maiden name being Mary Coole. She was one of the best known and respected women in Belpre, her life lived quietly in the family circle being one of great charity and unselfishness and she was a devoted wife and mother and an excellent neighbor. Early in life she affiliated with the Presbyterian church in Pittsburgh and her succeeding years carried out nobly the teachings of religion in the influence for good which she exerted on all about her.
Mrs. Oliver was the mother of nine daughters, six of whom are living and were with her when death came. These are Mrs. P. S. McCulsky (sic) of Belpre; Mrs. William McCory (sic), Akron, O.; Mrs. William Heasley, Sabina, O.; Mrs. P. G. Smith, Harrisville, W. Va.; Mrs. P. H. Glancy and Mrs. Floyd Anderson of this city. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Grandmother Froeschle
From the collection of the late Amelia Ruf Strauss, Marietta OH and then her granddaughter, the late Betty Jean Gephart Frey of Tucson AZ. The photo simply is labeled "Grandmother Froeschle" which leads me to believe it is the mother of Caroline Froeschle Ruf.Her mother was Caroline Friederike Merkle Froeschle. From the research of Martin Koepple of Plochingen, Germany he found that she was born 8 January 1808 in Uhlbach, Germany a daughter of Johannes Merkle and Christina Margaretha Zerweck Merkle. She married Andreas Froeschle, 18 May 1830 in Rotenberg, Wuerttemberg (Germany). She was his third wife. By 1870 the family had emigrated to Switzerland and she apparently died there.
Alfred G. Ruf (1857-1885), Williamstown WV

Alfred G. Ruf, was born 8 July 1857, Dayton OH, the eldest son of Albert and Caroline Froeschle Ruf. The family settled in Williamstown WV circa 1869-70 where they built and operated a tannery. Alfred worked at the tannery helping his father. He never married. On November 6, 1885 he committed suicide by shooting himself. He was buried in the Old Williamstown Cemetery.
In a letter from the late Betty Gephart Frey of Tucson AZ (formerly Marietta OH) she writes: " My grandmother (Amelia Ruf Strauss) was in Marietta when Alfred committed suicide. The river was frozen over (no bridges yet) and someone came to the Strauss home on Washington St. (someone from Williamstown). When she answered the door she said, "Alfred shot himself---I heard the shot", she said before the messenger could speak.
They were very close and she wasn't surprised that she knew. Alfred was trying to get his father to soften in his relations with family members. He thought that this might help. Because it was suicide they would not allow his body inside the old Catholic cemetery--so it is outside the fence. I used to go with my grandmother to visit the graves there. She is buried in Oak Grove on 8th St. (Marietta OH) very near the street. It is the Strauss Lot."
(Betty Gephart Frey, May 17, 1990, Tucson AZ)
Caroline Friederike Froeschle Ruf (1833-1903)

Caroline Friederike Froeschle Ruf, was born 23 November 1833, Rotenberg (near Stuttgart), Wuerttemberg (Germany), a daughter of Andreas Froeschle and Caroline Friederike Merkle Froeschle. She emigrated to the USA on the ship Hemisphere and arrived in New York on 8 May 1854 at the age of 20. She settled at Dayton OH where she married Albert Ruf on 13 January 1857. After residing in Athens and Meigs County, OH they finally settled in Williamstown WV where they established a tannery and raised their children. She died there 30 June 1903 and was buried in the Old Williamstown Cemetery across the road from their home and tannery.

Casper A. Ruf (1896-1976), Parkersburg WV

CASPER A. RUF (1896-1976)
Someone has said that "a good man lives honorably and dies regretted." Such a man was Casper Ruf, for he knew the summit of success and the valley of disappointment and reversal, while in each circumstance he retained his honor and dignity. In his administration of the affairs of the Mid Ohio Valley United Fund he maintained a high degree of fiscal responsibilty and financial integrity. He had an uncanny knack of being able to read the economic and employment climate of the community and translating that into realistic goals for each campaign. He kept a meticulous and thorough accounting of facts and information as they related to the operation of the United Fund. His modus operandi will long remain a guildeline and high criterion for his successors.
There is sincere regret at his demise, for he was a devoted husband, a gentleman, a churchman, and a trusted friend to many. He gave no quarter to that which was less than the best or to that which bore the effects of sham. He loved his community and contributed much to its betterment. The God and Father of us all has seen fit to call him to rest and to further service in His eternal realm.

"The Hole in the Hat" by Janet C. Oliver Smith
This little true tale happened long ago--I was number eight of nine sisters--
So I was not around when three of my sisters decided to go to the apple orchard to get some of the very good apples then ripe. But what to catch the apples in to prevent bruising?? No one thought of a basket but they decided my father's "Sunday go to meeting" hat was just right.
Away three of them went---one up the tree to pick the best, the other two below to catch. Oh-h--down came the apples---and one went through the crown of their dad's good hat---. Consternation prevailed---home they went---my mother saw the apples but she did not see the hat--. Never dreaming the girls would ever think of taking their dad's best hat to catch apples---.
Well the girls had a problem---but being resourceful they had one bit of good luck--- the apple did go through the hat but there was a small hinge we will say to the hanging flap, so they worked & pressed it all back nicely and put the hat away where it was usually kept---My father wore it again & again--till at last the girls decided they had better confess. And when they did---my father asked why on earth did you pick my good hat to catch apples?? Sarah, my eldest sister, replied, "Why we thought it being your best, it was worthy of catching the best apples".---No punishment my dad thought it rather good. Only scolded for taking the hat and not asking our mother's permission.
(The story is written by Janet C. Oliver Smith (1888-1983) of Belpre OH. Her father was David Oliver and her sisters in this story were Sarah, Lyda and Mamie Oliver.)
